English subtitles.
Director: By Yusup Razykov (Uzbekistan)
Venue: G50, Main Building, SOAS

About the Film: It explores the accidental exploits of Iskander, a
40-ish cart driver who is glumly comfortable in the Tashkent of 1915.
He has three wives - one's a mere teenager he saved from
money-grubbing marauders and the other two he inherited from his late
brother - but there's no great passion in his life. Then, a chance
encounter with some Bolsheviks on the run gives him a chance to talk
to his neighbors, in their own language, about politics. Come the
Bolshevik revolution, he starts traveling and moving up the ranks
until his traditional Muslim lifestyle soon conflicts with the beliefs
of authorities, especially with the Uzbek female commissar in charge
of his district.
All Welcome

Film Screening
Date: Thursday, 15 November 2007
Time: 7 pm
Title: You Are Not an Orphan [Ty ne sirota] 1962, 75 minutes, in
Russian with English subtitles.
Director: By Shukhrat Abbasov (Uzbekistan)
Venue: 7 pm in room G50
Contact: Bhavna Dave (bd4@soas.ac.uk) or Jane Savory (js64@soas.ac.uk)

About the Film: Abbasov, one of the founders of Uzbek national
cinematograph, brings out several issues and concerns, typical for the
films of Soviet era - the effects of World War II on family life, life
in Soviet orphanages and the "internationalism" of Soviet life. Shot
in 1963, it shows how children of different nationalities learn to
live together as one family as it also brings out "Uzbek" social
values - the advantage of a big family and the connections with one's
close community, the mahalla.
