CFA- Field Workshop in Tuva, Russian Central Asia, July 30-Aug. 4

Dear Colleagues,

This is an invitation to a field workshop (30 July - 4 August) in Tuva
(Russian Central Asia) which may be of interest to early medieval
archaeologists and historians, geoarchaeologists, and those specialising in
prospecting, conservation, and presentation of archaeological monuments.
Funds are available to support travel to Moscow; transport from Moscow,
accommodation and food are free.

The "Por-Bajin Fortress" Cultural Foundation, the Russian Academy of
Sciences, the State Oriental Museum, Moscow State University and
Russian Association of Geomorphologists invite to the field workshop
"Fortress Por-Bajin: Geoarchaeology and Protection of Cultural
Heritage" which will be held at the Por-Bajin (or Por-Bazhyn)
expedition camp in the Tuva Republic of Russia, July 30 - August 4,
2008. Information on the archaeological project is available at

www.por-bajin.ru. A high-resolution satellite image taken on August
7th, 2007 is available on Google Earth (type Por-Bajin in the "Flight'
window or use the geo-graphical coordinates of the site: 50°36'53.87"
N, 97°23'6.57"E).

Participants are advised that the solar eclipse of 1 August will
happen during the field seminar, with more than 90% of the sun
eclipsed as seen from Por-Bajin.

state "Por-Bajin Field Workshop, August 2008" in the subject line of
the message.
Capacity of the field camp and means of transport mean that we have to
restrict the number of participants to 20.

Registration Fee

The registration fee is 800 euros. It covers a helicopter or
cross-country vehicle return journey from Kyzyl to Por Bajin,
accommodation in the field camp, all meals and refreshments, and
workshop materials. Terms of payment will be specified in the second circular.

Important dates

May 15, 2008 - deadline for registration;
May 20, 2008 - second circular and official invitations;
July 30, 2008 - meeting and registration of participants at Kyzyl airport.
