JOB- Afghan Pashtu Translator/Analyst, Naval Postgraduate School

The Program for Culture & Conflict Studies (CCS;
http://www.nps.edu/programs/ccs), within the Department of National
Security Affairs (http://www.nps.edu/academics/sigs/nsa) at the Naval
Postgraduate School (http://www.nps.edu) is seeking a motivated
individual for the position of Pashtu translator/analyst. The
application process is a rolling one, and applicants will be contacted
as positions become available.
Our works include gazetteer research, a bi-monthly publication,
scholarly articles in numerous relevant periodicals, and timely
responses to Requests for Information. Duties will consist of
research in support of ongoing CCS projects concerning tribal and
ethnic geography, human terrain / anthropological analyses, security,
development, translation of audio and written materials from Pashtu;
global military issues and capabilities, homeland security and U.S.
policy, primarily but not exclusively in Afghanistan. Official travel
to Afghanistan will be required, however majority of work will be done
in the US. The translator will occasionally be assigned to other
tasks at the discretion of the Director.
The competitive candidate will have:
- Fluency in Pashtu and Dari with excellent verbal and written
translation skills into English;
- A Bachelor's degree with experience conducting research and analysis;
- Understanding of U.S. and foreign operations in Afghanistan, and an
interest in world affairs;
- Ability to develop presentations and concise analyses on short notice;
- Strong writing and editing skills;
- Strong analytical background;
- Excellent communication and organizational skills;
- The candidate must be a US Citizen.
