FELLOWSHIPS- PhD Positions: Socio-technical Water Research, Khorezm, Uzbekistan

Posted by: Anna-Katharina Hornidge <hornidge@uni-bonn.de>

The interdisciplinary ZEF/UNESCO project on Sustainable Management of
Land and Water Resources in Khorezm, Uzbekistan (funded mainly by the
Federal Ministry of Education and Research, Germany and run by the
Center for Development Research and partners) is currently one year
into its third phase. During the first two phases of the project a
number of technological and institutional innovation packages were
developed and now pose "plausible promises" for outscaling. At the
same time, the members of the Government of Uzbekistan as well as
International Financial Organisations and other donor agencies in
Central Asia have repeatedly voiced their interest in the developed
ideas. We therefore believe to have reached an excellent momentum for
testing and finalizing these promises together with the local
stakeholders (farmers, local, regional and national decision-makers)
and jointly address supportive legal, institutional and socio-cultural
environments for innovation diffusion.

Specifically we are currently looking for potential PhD-candidates
interested to work on the social and political dimension of water,
water management, distribution and usage. In particular, we are
interested in topics such as further in-depth studies on the existing
governance and institutional structures of water, organizational
arrangements and participatory processes of diffusing water-related
innovation packages.

We are looking for interested and motivated candidates with sound
socio-technical background and if possible (but not mandatory)
research experience in/on central asia. Interested candidates are
kindly requested to send their applications (cv and summary of
PhD-proposal) asap to the social science research unit within the
project, in particular to Dr. Anna-Katharina Hornidge (Center for
Development Research, University of Bonn, Walter-Flex-Str. 1-3, 53113
Bonn/Germany, Mail: Hornidge@uni-bonn.de). Deadline is 10 February 09.
