The Harriman Institute
Presents
Racketeer (Kazakstan), 2007
The New criminal drama from the past...
Racketeer is a depiction of the rampant capitalism that arose after the
collapse of the Soviet Union. The film unfolds through the eyes of a teenage
boxer from Kazakhstan. After knocking out his opponent with one swift blow
at a boxing match in Almaty, 1993, Sayan Bekarimov (Isembaev) attracts the
attention of Ruslan (Bisembin), an up-and-coming racketeer. Faced with few
alternatives in a bleak post-Soviet environment, Sayan drops out of the
institute he worked so hard to attend, and joins Ruslan's criminal
entourage.
Introduction by Rafis Abazov, author of the Culture and Customs of the
Central Asian Republics.
