FALL TERM Course
Sociology 134: Theories of Power and Postcommunist Societies
Tu/Th 1:00-2:30, WJH 105
Dr. Laura Adams, ladams@fas.harvard.edu
This is an introductory course in contemporary social theory that has
a thematic focus on the concept of power (broadly defined), and an
empirical focus on socialist and post-socialist societies. Socialist
societies pose a challenge for contemporary theories by challenging
their underlying assumptions about capitalism and modernity. By
exploring theories of power and examining how sociologists and other
social scientists apply these theories to cases ranging from Cuba to
Tajikistan, we will enrich our understanding of both theory and these
societies. Each week will pair readings from a particular school or
theorist (such as Pierre Bourdieu, Judith Butler, Michel Foucault,
Antonio Gramsci, Edward Said, and James C. Scott) with readings that
employ that theoretical perspective in their empirical investigations.
Students will be evaluated on their class participation and several
short papers. Graduate students will be asked to complete a research
paper that explicitly employs one or more theoretical approaches.
Note: In SPRING TERM, Dr. Adams will teach:
Sociology 174. Contemporary Central Asian Societies (Spring Term)
