American Councils for International Education: ACTR/ACCELS is now
accepting applications for its 2008-2009 Grants for Research and
Advanced Language Training Programs in Central Asia and the South
Caucasus. Applications for Spring and Summer 2008 programs are due October 1.
Applications are now available for download at
www.americancouncils.org or by contacting the American Councils
Outbound Office. Funding for these programs is available through
American Councils from U.S. Department of State (Title VIII) grant
support. This year, fellowships will be offered in three categories:
Title VIII Research Scholar Program: Provides full support for three-
to nine-month research trips to Russia, Central Asia, the South
Caucasus, Southeastern Europe, Ukraine, Belarus, and Moldova.
Fellowships include roundtrip international travel, housing and living
stipends, visa support, medical insurance, archive access, and
logistical support in the field. Open to U.S. graduate students,
post-doctoral scholars, and faculty. Application deadlines: October 1
(Spring and Summer Programs); January 15 (Fall and Academic Year Programs).
Title VIII Combined Research and Language Training Program: Provides
full support for research and up to ten hours per week of advanced
language instruction for three-to-nine months in Russia, Central Asia,
the South Caucasus, Ukraine, Belarus, and Moldova. Fellowships include
roundtrip international travel, housing and living stipends, tuition,
visa support, medical insurance, archive access, and logistical
support in the field. Open to U.S. graduate students, post-doctoral
scholars, and faculty. Application deadlines: October 1 (Spring and
Summer Programs); January 15 (Fall and Academic Year Programs).
Title VIII Special Initiatives Fellowship: Provides grants of up to
$35,000 for field research on policy-relevant topics in Armenia,
Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan,
and Uzbekistan. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in a policy-relevant
field and have sufficient language ability to carry out proposed
research. Scholars must conduct research for at least four months in
the field. Application deadlines: October 1 (Spring and Summer
Programs); January 15 (Fall and Academic Year Programs).
While a wide-range of topics receive support each year, all funded
research must contribute to a body of knowledge enabling the U.S. to
better understand the region and formulate effective policies within
it. All applicants should clearly describe the policy-relevance of
their work, be it in anthropology, history, international relations,
political science, or some other field.
Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. All
competitions for funding are open and merit based. All applications
will receive consideration without regard to any non-merit factors
such as race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, national
origin, marital status, age (with authorized exceptions), political
affiliation, or disability. Funding for this program is made available
by the U.S. Department of State's Program for the Study of Eastern
Europe and Independent States of the Former Soviet Union (Title VIII).
