CALL FOR PARTICIPATION - Summer Courses: Germany, the European Union
and Central Asia 2008 in Germany

The research, professionalisation, and cooperation project for the
academic successor generation of Central Asia organised by
International Relations and Foreign Policy Studies at the Institute of
Political Science Justus-Liebig-University of Giessen/Germany funded
by VOLKSWAGEN-Foundation (2007-2009) consists of four components:

1) 2 summer courses III and IV in Germany;
2) 2 workshops: Good Governance/Good Regional Cooperation in Central Asia;
3) final conference in Germany;
4) 6 visiting fellowships for 1/2 year in Germany.

Application deadline: 15 November 2007

The two Summer Courses (each for 20 participants) will be organised:

1) March 17th - April 06th, 2008: Summer Course III 'Germany, the
European Union, and Central Asia' (2 weeks Giessen-Rauischholzhausen +
1 week Berlin)

2) September 29th - October 18th, 2008: Summer Course IV 'Germany, the
European Union, and Central Asia'(2 weeks Giessen-Rauischholzhausen +
1 week Berlin)

Both Summer Courses combine classroom lectures about Germany and the
European Union with visiting programmes to German political
institutions. The week in Berlin combines classroom lectures about
recent developments in Germany and the European Union with a visiting
programme to political institutions and organisations etc.

Eligibility criteria: The project invites members of the academic
successor generation from all Central Asian countries (i.e. young
university lecturers/professors, Ph.D. candidates, young researchers
and post-docs) plus a limited number of public servants, journalists,
etc. to apply at their national DAAD office for participation in one
of the Summer Courses.

Fluent English language competence is required.

Application materials: A two page statement explaining candidate's
special interest in participation in one of the courses with a
Curriculum Vitae (including addresses, phone numbers, and e-mail
address).

Selected candidates will be invited to be interviewed in the DAAD
offices in Almaty and Tashkent in mid-December 2007. Final decisions
about participation will be made by the end of 2007.

Participation in Summer Courses, workshops, and the final conference
are free; expenses are covered by funds from the
Volkswagen-Foundation. The best six participants in both Summer
Courses will receive a ½-year visiting fellowship in Germany.
