EXHIBIT- Silk Road Seattle's New Museum Galleries

Posted by: Daniel Waugh <dwaugh@u.washington.edu>

Silk Road Seattle is pleased to announce several important new
additions to its Featured Museums image galleries, accessible via the
links at <http://depts.washington.edu/silkroad/museums/srmuseums.html>.

The new material includes:

- The Musee Guimet (Paris), the French national museum of Asian art.
Several hundred images, in the first instance from their Afghanistan
and China collections. A great many of these objects are not
otherwise illustrated on the Internet, even though the museum's own
website is beautifully designed and very valuable.
- The Louvre (Paris). Several hundred objects from the Near Eastern
Antiquities and Islamic sections of the museum. While the Louvre's
own excellent website covers a good part of what we have photographed,
our selection often includes different views and images of objects
which they have not yet illustrated.
- The National Museum of the Middle Ages (Paris). A small selection
from this interesting museum, highlighting textiles and ivories.
- The Cathedral Museum (Uppsala, Sweden), a collection renowned for
its medieval textiles. We are grateful to Lt. Col. Peter C. Barclay
for providing some of the photographs.

The image galleries in Silk Road Seattle include introductory comments
on the museum and its collections, generally good to excellent quality
enlargeable photographs, descriptive captions, and some reference
material to hard-copy publications. Where possible, links have been
provided to the coverage of the objects on each museum's own web page
or to web pages with analogous objects in other museums'™ collections.

This is an ongoing project to make materials available for education.
We could use some help. Suggestions and contributions of material
would be most welcome.

PUBL.- Women of Central Asia: Gender and Change in Sovietized Muslim Societies

Distrib. by: Central-Eurasia-L - Announcement List for Central Eurasian Studies

PUBL.- Women of Central Asia: Gender and Change in Sovietized Muslim Societies

Posted by: Habiba Fathi <habiba.f@netcourrier.com>

Dear Colleagues:

I have the pleasure to announce the publication of:

Femmes d'Asie centrale. Genre et Mutations dans les sociétés
musulmanes soviétisées,[Women of Central Asia. Gender and Changes in
Sovietized Muslim Societies], edited by Habiba Fathi, Paris, Aux lieux
d'être/IFEAC, 2007, 444 p. (In French).

I. Summary:

Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan...
These former federal republics of Central Asia, previously under
Soviet control, are now newly independent countries confronting the
problem of how to manage their multiple heritages. How did the Soviet
authoritarian policy of modernizing women's status, enforced
throughout Central Asia starting in the early 1920s, and then the
construction of modern nation-states affect gender roles? Were they
reproduced or redefined? For the first time, a French-language work
answers these questions, relating them to gender and change. This
collective book aims to shed new light on the modifications to the
various statuses of Muslim women in Central Asia from Russian
colonization to the present.

At a time when public debate is focusing on the place given to women
in Islam, this work's ambition is to recount the experiences of women
in the Sovietized Muslim societies of Central Asia, a region once
again in the grips of profound upheaval.

EXHIBIT- The Eternal Traveler, Artist Reception and Book Presentation, ALMA

A distribution of: Central-Asia-Harvard-List. The Announcement List for
Central Eurasian Studies at Harvard University

EXHIBIT- The Eternal Traveler, Artist Reception and Book Presentation, ALMA

Posted by: Armenian Library & Museum <armenianlma@yahoo.com>

ALMA and Hamazkayin-Boston would like to remind you that the artist
reception and book signing with maestro Rafael Hambardzumyan will take
place at 4:00 on Sunday, April 29, at ALMA's Contemporary Art Gallery.
As you know, ALMA has been hosting Hambardzumyan's exhibit "The
Eternal Traveler". The artist will present his latest book showcasing
a remarkable collection of his photographs spanning an almost 60-year
professional career. Each page of this coffee-table book feels like a
small Armenia or Yerevan , and provides appeasement to the nostalgic
feelings of Armenians in Diaspora.

Hambardzumyan's photographs take the viewer on an emotional roller
coaster of pain, pride, hope and joy. Many Armenians know him for his
work for the prestigious "Yerekoyan Yerevan" news magazine published
in Armenia . While working for the magazine, he would capture unique
tidbits of the daily life of Yerevan and its inhabitants.
Hambardzumyan is the author of the most well-known panoramic
photograph of Yerevan.

His black and white photographs emanate rich personalities and nuances
of the captured moods. The portraits are deep, emotional, and moving:
Hambardzumyan creates magic with the angle of his lens and his
interpretation of light and shadow and finds a unique solution, which
makes the portraits "speak". Looking at his portraits one can't help
but be drawn to the expression of the people's eyes, and be
mesmerized, intrigued and simply curious… One of Hambardzumyan's most
celebrated photographs, "After Surgery" is the portrait of Ruben
Paronyan, where he captures the spiritual vigor of the surgeon
convinced in his mission with self-determination, balance, and firm
disposition.

Hambardzumyan's style and talent is not limited to portraits. His
creations are full of variety and style. His inspiration comes from
his home country with its beautiful landscapes and people. The
photographs of scenic landscapes are breathtaking, and each of them is
a confession of his love for his home, Armenia . His sharp attention
to detail captures the beauty of nature. His lens makes the rocky
mountains of Armenia ring in harmony and shine with a majestic
magnificence. Every time his lens captured Mount Ararat , it is as if
it tried to bring the mountain closer, dissipate its mystery and
embrace its splendid beauty.

The exhibit "The Eternal Traveler" was reviewed in the Daily News
Tribune - to read the article please follow this link

CONF./CFP- Warsaw East European Conference, July 15-18, 2007

Distrib. by: Central-Eurasia-L - Announcement List for Central Eurasian Studies

CONF./CFP- Warsaw East European Conference, July 15-18, 2007

Posted by: Warsaw East European Conference <conf.stadium@uw.edu.pl>

Warsaw East European Conference
Warsaw, July 15-18, 2007

Studium Europy Wschodniej UW (The Centre for East European Studies of
Warsaw University) is organizing the Warsaw East European Conference,
Fourth Annual Session, to be held in Warsaw, July 15-18, 2007.

The main subjects of the Warsaw East European Conference, Fourth
Annual Session, are democratic and authoritarian tendencies in East
Central, South Eastern and Eastern Europe since 18th century. The
Conference will focus on history of 19th and 20th centuries as well as
current political, social, economic, national and cultural issues
related to the main subject. Special attention will be given to the
problems of the communist and post-communist world. Therefore, the
Caucasus and Central Asian issues will be also relevant for the WEEC,
Fourth Annual Session.

The WEEC, Fourth Annual Session is dedicated to the issue of
democratic and authoritarian rules in the region. One of the
traditions of modern democracy in East Central Europe has its roots in
the so called 'noble democracy' of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth
of 16th - 18th centuries. The issues of federalist and centralist
systems, interethnic peace and conflict, religious tolerance and
discrimination in multinational states of the region such as Polish-
Lithuanian state, Russian, Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman empires will
be examined during several of the Conference panels. Another topic of
the WEEC, Fourth Annual Session will be national question in the 19th
century, often called the century of the revival of the nations or,
according to other theories, the century of the birth of the nations.
The 2007 Conference will be also focused on ideologies like
nationalism, Marxism, socialism and their relationships with
democratic, authoritarian and totalitarian political systems.

Next section of the WEEC, Fourth Annual Session, will be related to
communism and developments, which took place in Central and Eastern
Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia after the Bolshevik Revolution of
1917. Special issues of the WEEC concerning the communist period are:
opposition and dissidents in Soviet Union and communist bloc,
relations between state and confessional groups in communist countries
and cultural changes in totalitarian countries.

Another part of the WEEC problems are current political, social,
economic and cultural developments in the region. Particular attention
will be given to the EU Eastern policy, its relations with Russia, and
energy security problems. One of the Conference panels will be
dedicated to Putin's domestic and foreign policy as well as imperial
tendencies in modern Russia. EU's enlargement, its experience with new
member states Bulgaria and Romania, as well as the chances for
accession of Croatia, Ukraine or Turkey will be also examined during
the WEEC, Fourth Annual Session. Another important topics will be EU's
policy towards the Black Sea region and chances for democracy in Transcaucasia.

Finally, general condition of democracy and civil society in
post-communist area and specific topics like changing notion of
citizenship, local democracies and civil society construction, NGOs
activities, state and individual freedom will be discussed during the
WEEC, Fourth Annual Session.

Deadline for sending application forms and paper proposals: April 30, 2007

Forms must be sent by e-mail at conf.studium@uw.edu.pl

Further details concerning Warsaw East European Conference, Fourth
Annual Session, find in attachment "Call for papers" at:

WORKSHOP- Conflict and Cooperation in Eurasian Cities, Napoli, May 29, 2007

Distrib. by: Central-Eurasia-L - Announcement List for Central Eurasian Studies

WORKSHOP- Conflict and Cooperation in Eurasian Cities, Napoli, May 29, 2007

Posted by: Abel Polese <abelpolese@hotmail.com>

(Informal) Call for contributions

On the 29th of May we are holding, at the University of Napoli Federico II,
a workshop on multicultural cities.

Synergies of the cities: conflict, cooperation and use of spaces in
multicultural Eurasian cities.

Consolidation and reshaping of borders, together with the urbanization
processes and the forced migrations of the 20th centuries have shaken
and altered the social, economic, ethnic and linguistic composition of
most Eurasian cities. Many cities of Central and Eastern Europe have
lost their 19th century plurilingual substratum. Still, new forms of
multicultural interactions have developed in these cities, as in the
overall European urban areas, between old settlers and new comers, in
the different phases of the 20th century.

Ethnic and national identifications are multilayered, and social,
regional, generational and gender forms of identifications, also play
a big role in the identity of people, and of groups either. The
apparent mono-national paradigm of the post WWII cities of Central and
Eastern Europe, at a closer look, has to be challenged. The cities of
the socialist societies, and of the post-socialist societies, reveal
various forms of adjustments, choices, and peculiarities of the fast
and slow nationalization processes. In general, the process of
urbanization has continuously reshaped the cultural and social
settings and interactions in the cities of Central and Eastern Europe,
not to speak of Central Asia, where the nation building processes have
only partially being successful, and western Europe, whose urban areas
have been exposed to massive global migrations in the last decades.

The demographic modifications and the reshaping of borders, along with
the changes in the institutional and social setting during the "long"
20th century, have led to a transformation of the role and sense of
the urban space, in the different European urban areas. The new
relationships between town and countryside, and/or between the central
urban area and the highly urbanized or industrialized peripheries,
reflect the modifications in the identity and social structures of the
urban centers. We have witnessed escalation of violence in a number of
cities and pacific cooperation of locals in an apparently random
pattern, which motivates us in the investigation of the reasons,
causes, mechanisms and timing of ethnic and economic conflicts.

Starting out from some case studies of Eurasian cities (Mostar,
Samarqand, Odessa and Jerusalem), the project intend to use first
source material, gathered during fieldwork, to reach some theoretical
conclusions. In the course of the project it is envisaged to integrate
other cities into the case studies sample so to be able to extend
theoretical conclusions to a broader area and compare different cities
in Europe, as in the Mediterranean and Central Asian areas.

In particular the project tries to answer questions such as:
- The impact of the processes of mixing and un-mixing of the population.
- The different experiences and forms of concrete multiculturalism
- The elements bringing to an escalation of conflicts and those
bringing to pacific coexistence or even
cooperation between different groups.
- The role of economic and other factors in the nature, and extent,
of ethnic conflicts.
- The management of urban space in the promotion of ethnic and
political competition and of cooperation and integration.
- The border between public and private space; the self-organization
and the self-management of the public space by the local community vs.
the action of the state.
- The international and local actors in the development of the trends
towards cooperation and conflict in crises conjunctures.
- Examples of successful cooperation and the possibility to draw some
theoretical conclusions

In the course of the project it is envisaged to integrate such
findings with those from other cities.

The idea is to meet up to discuss our research findings and possibly
come up with some ideas for a large scale research project or at least
building up of a network. We would invite researchers who might be
interested in such project to either submit a short abstract or
contact us and inform on their availability. The reason why we call
this an informal call apart from the fact that the call is launched
quite late- are two:

1. Since it is an informal (and pilot) event we have no funding at all
for this event, those coming should cover their costs. We can assist
in finding a cheap place to sleep 'chez l'habitant' (around 30 euros
per night) or try to arrange something for free at somebody's place
(depending upon availability) and a lunch with pizza and drink cost
around 5 euros and for cheap flights one can check www.whichbudget.com

2. Language, most of the paper givers are native Italian speakers and
I reckon there will be one or two researchers with low English level
and some presentations might be in Italian. You are welcome to present
in English, French or Spanish (and, of course, Italian) but must be
aware that Italian will have a major role in the event

If you can get along with those conditions, are interested, and have a
solid research project ongoing or about to be, please contact us at
<abel@ehess.fr> (Abel)
<gidaless@unina.it> (Vanni)

CFP- Community Colleges in Central Eurasia

CFP- Community Colleges in Central Eurasia

Call For Chapter Proposals

This is a call for chapters for a new publication to be published by
Springer Publishers under the CERC Studies in Comparative Education series.

Community College Models: Globalization and Higher Education Reform

Edited by
Rosalind Latiner Raby (California Colleges for International Education).
Edward Valeau (President, Hartnell College)

The anticipated publication date will be March 2008

The community college prototype (that combines elements of liberal, technical,
vocational and occupational education) exists in various forms
throughout the world. In many countries, the adoption of community
college characteristics, most particularly that of open access, has
initiated widespread higher educational reform. Community college
models tend to educate non-traditional post-secondary students and
demonstrate in a practical way the means by which new generations can
receive skills that will ensure employment, prosperity, and
facilitation of democracy. As such, these institutions tend to serve
as a symbol of equity as they provide access to higher education for
the masses in places where access has previously been denied. In our
era of expanded educational reform for higher education, the role of
the community college model cannot be ignored.

The proposed book, Community College Models: Globalization and Higher
Education Reform, will explore the philosophical, logistical, and
thematic attributes of community college models through case-studies
and will provide a comparative analysis to understand how
post-secondary educational reform efforts are currently being in
enacted in countries worldwide. The book is intended to appeal to the
professionals in the field, graduate students of higher education,
comparative researchers and will add to discussions on community
college education currently taking place among policy makers

We are soliciting chapter proposals from scholars in the field of
comparative and international education, higher education, and
community college research who can contribute to a critical
understanding of the field, policy making or policy implementation,
and/or provide original research on the impact that community college
models have made to education in general . The intent is to have a
combination of state-of-the-field reviews, new empirical scholarship,
and critical discussions of major topics around the volume's theme.
All proposals/manuscripts will be peer-reviewed.

We are especially in interested in receiving proposal regarding
community college models in Central Eurasia.

Please contact us with chapter proposals by May 25, 2007. Proposals
should be a maximum of 250 words and include:

a) title of proposed chapter
b) description of chapter emphasis
c) personal expertise in the field
d) contact information

Please send chapter proposals to

ROUNDTABLE- Role of Moldo in Kyrgyz Society, Aigine CRC, Bishkek, Apr 25, 2007

Distrib. by: Central-Eurasia-L - Announcement List for Central Eurasian Studies

ROUNDTABLE- Role of Moldo in Kyrgyz Society, Aigine CRC, Bishkek, Apr 25, 2007

Posted by: Zemfira Inogamova <inogamova@gmail.com>

The Aigine Cultural Research Center in Bishkek presents:

ROUNDTABLE:

"The Role of Moldo (mullah) in Kyrgyz Contemporary Society"

Aigine Cultural Research Center, Bishkek, April 25, 2007.

Roundtable agenda:

- Contradictions between traditional beliefs and Fundamental Islam in
contemporary Kyrgyz society

- Collision of "musulmanchylyk" (muslimness) and "kyrgyzchylyk" (kyrgyzness);

Participants: Moldos (mullahs) & Researchers on Religion and Culture.

Date and time: 10:00-13:00, Wed., April 25, 2007
Venue: Aigine Research Center, Toktogula 93, Bishkek
Language: Kyrgyz/Russian. If requested, translation will be provided

Synopsis:
The question of religion and religious orientation is important in any
society. The official religion in Kyrgyzstan is Islam. However, what
Islam the country inhabitants should practice? Speaking based on
experience of Aigine, that Islam, which:

- Includes worshipping of the sacred sites or excludes it;

- Includes a big variety of rituals or limited to certain rituals
permitted somewhere and by someone;

- Allows traditional healing or forbids it;

- Includes various kinds of spiritual practices or limited to
practices described and approved somewhere and by someone.

The overwhelming majority of pilgrims of Kyrgyzstan considers
themselves as Muslims and do not agree with the opposition of their
"impure" and "distorted" Islam to another "pure" and "normative".
Currently, Aigine cooperates mainly with people practicing cultural
Islam, which conflict-freely combines the ancient values with Islamic
norms. And the Islamic norms are as traditional to them as the
pre-Islamic ones. The differentiation of "Islamic" "pre-Islamic"
itself was erased for people practicing popular Islam.

There are other types of the religious representatives for whom
differentiation of "Islamic" and "pre-Islamic" is an essential one. In
general they conditionally could be named "moldos" (mullah). Aigine
started working with moldos in order to look for ways to consolidate
different types of Muslims in the country.

Aigine Cultural Research was founded in 2004 as a nongovernmental
public fund, dedicated to the research of the cultural heritage and
traditional knowledge of Kyrgyzstan. Aigine mission is to promulgate
little known aspects of the diverse cultural and natural heritage of
Kyrgyzstan, to contribute to the development of cultural heritage
management in Kyrgyzstan and to search for ways to reconcile and
integrate esoteric and scientific approaches to understanding, nature
and culture, tradition and innovation, history and modernity, and west
and east. Aigine emphasize and utilize inter-ethnic, inter-cultural,
inter-religious, and inter-age phenomena to promote tolerance and
mutual understanding among the ethnicities, cultures, religious
groups, and generations of Kyrgyzstan.

LECTURE: "When the Divine Takes Place: Experiences of the Divine in
Bukhara and Bishkek", Maria Elizabeth Louw, SRC, AUCA, Bishkek, April 25, 2007

Social Research Center at AUCA (www.src.auca.kg) presents:

LECTURE: "When the Divine Takes Place: Experiences of the Divine in
Bukhara and Bishkek"

Presenter: Maria Elisabeth Louw, PhD in Anthropology and Ethnography,
Aarhus University, Denmark, SRC Visiting Research Fellow, AUCA

Date and time: 17:00-18:00, Wed., April 25, 2007
Venue: Room 232, Main Building, AUCA
Language: English. If requested, translation will be provided

Synopsis: The veneration of sacred places has often been identified as
the most important aspect of popular Islam in Central Asia. Even more
importantly, however, may be those points in time and space where the
Divine breaks through in people's life worlds. In other words, where
the Divine takes place. People frequently experience glimpses of the
Divine in what might appear to the spectator as insignificant
phenomena and occurrences and strive to make them socially significant.

Maria Louw will talk about her research on sacred places and
experiences of the Divine in Central Asia, drawing in particular on
her former research in Bukhara, while also including reflections on
her current fieldwork in Bishkek.

Bio: Maria Elisabeth Louw holds a PhD from the Department of
Anthropology and Ethnography, Aarhus University, Denmark, and is
currently postdoctoral fellow in the same University. She is also a
Visiting Research Fellow at Social Research Center, AUCA. Maria Louw
has done extensive fieldwork in Central Asia, focusing in particular
on everyday religion, morality and politics in the context of
post-Soviet social change. Her current project, which is based on
anthropological fieldwork in Bishkek, focuses on the relationship
between the religious, the secular and the esoteric in everyday life
in modern Kyrgyzstan. This project is being supported by the Danish
Research Council for the Humanities, the Danish Council for Strategic
Research and His Royal Highness Crown Prince Frederik's Foundation.

This lecture is arranged by Social Research Center at AUCA through
funding provided by the US Embassy in the Kyrgyz Republic.

LECTURE- D. Northrop and S. Kotkin, 4/24 and 5/2, GMU

Posted by: Eric Max Mcglinchey <emcglinc@gmu.edu>

George Mason's Focus on Central Asia Program is pleased to announce
public lectures by Douglas Northrop (April 24) and Stephen Kotkin (May
2). All are welcome.

Douglas Northrop, "Earthquakes and Empire: Remembering Disaster in
Central Asia"

Tuesday, April 24, 3:00-4:30 pm, SUB I, Room C

Over the last two centuries, Russian and Soviet governments have
repeatedly attempted to build a new political and social world in
Central Asia. What happens, though, when that world collapses?
Cultural encounters in Central Asia took many forms -- but efforts to
establish Moscow's authority faced particular challenges in extreme
climactic conditions and "natural" hazards.

This talk considers the impact of one such hazard, earthquakes, in
shaping the actions and outlook of Russian officials and local
populations, and it asks how the recurrent experience of seismic
calamity shaped efforts to remember and commemorate disasters in the
imperial periphery.

Douglas Northrop is Associate Professor of Modern Central Asian
Studies at the University of Michigan and author of Veiled Empire:
Gender and Power in
Stalinist Central Asia.

Stephen Kotkin, "Empire without Nostalgia"

Wednesday, May 2, 4:30-6:00 pm, Research I, Room 163

"Eurasia" as a term has suddenly become ubiquitous from scholarly
journals and foundation programs to journalism and everyday speech.
But is the idea
of "Eurasia" the disease masquerading as the cure? How are we to
understand the history and possible future of the vast space that lies
between Germany
and Japan? Could it be that we have it all wrong? This talk will
examine practices of exchange and governance, from the imperial
Mongols to Vladimir
Putin and Nursultan Nazarbaev.

Stephen Kotkin is Professor of Russian History and Director of the
Program in Russian Studies at Princeton University. His books include Magnetic
Mountain: Stalinism as a Civilization and Armageddon Averted: The
Soviet Collapse, 1970-2000.

The Davis Center Student Film Series Continues with the Kazakh epic Sardar

Wednesday, April 18, 5 pm

CGIS North, Room N-031 (concourse level)

CGIS North is located at 1737 Cambridge Street, just one short block
east of Memorial Hall. Snacks will be provided

Sardar (Kazakhstan) with guest speaker Professor Jane Knox-Voina.
2005. 95 mintutes. Directed by Bolat Kalymbetov. In Kazakh with
English subtitles.

Synopsis: An epic historical spectacle set amongst landscapes as
beautiful and awe-inspiring as those of any western, Sardar is based
on Kazakhstan history and folktales. Inspired by tales of the brave
deeds of "sardars," heroes of 18th century Kazakh history, three young
men decide to emulate these warriors of yore, immediately entering the
world of fantasy and legend, where they play out the role of defenders
of freedom-loving Kazakh nomads, and become involved in attempting to
free a kidnapped Kazakh princess with whom they fall in love. These
events unfold on a rich canvas of natural beauty--one can almost sense
the smells of earth, forest, steppe and mountain.

Jane Knox-Voina is Professor of Russian at Bowdoin College. She is
interested in visual arts, focusing on Russian painting and film as
expressions of mentality. She has published extensively in the areas
of Russian film and literature, and is a leading authority on Central
Asian cinema.

The Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies is sponsoring a
spring semester film series for students and affiliates with an
interest in Russia, Central Asia, and Eastern Europe. This semester we
are focusing on Central Asia and Russia. The series is free of

INTERNSHIP- Human Rights Law, Tajikistan

Distrib. by: Central-Eurasia-L - Announcement List for Central Eurasian Studies

INTERNSHIP- Human Rights Law, Tajikistan

Posted by: <RaissaGMF@aol.com>

2007 Summer Internship
Human Rights Law in Central Asia
June 1 - August 31, Tajikistan

Application deadline: May 10, 2007

The Bureau of Human Rights and Rule of Law (BHR), an NGO located in
the Republic of Tajikistan in Central Asia, is offering Summer
Internships in Human Rights Law for highly qualified Law students and
recent Law graduates.

Background: Tajikistan is a transitional state of 7 million people,
having become independent in 1991 upon the breakup of the Soviet
Union. Despite impressive economic growth and fair amounts of
political stability in recent years, the situation with regard to
Human Rights and rule of law has not seen substantial - if any -
improvements. Local and international laws are routinely broken and
the justice system is rife with corruption and nepotism. In such an
atmosphere, some Human Rights NGOs play a critical role by providing
free legal assistance to selected deserving clienteles and through the
dissemination of legal information and training to law professionals,
students, and the general population.

Objectives: The main objectives of the 2007 Summer Internship in Human
Rights Law offered by the BHR are to familiarize an international
Intern with local Human Rights conditions (and vice versa), and assist
the local branches of BHR (in either the capital city Dushanbe or any
of the regional offices in Khujand and Khorog) on human rights
advocacy, legal assistance, and general office duties.

Responsibilities: (i) Backstop BHR staff in the provision of legal
advice to clients; (ii) Assist in ongoing research efforts on Human
Rights-related issues, such as land and housing confiscation by local
Governments, and general monitoring and recording of Human Rights
situation in the country; (iii) Assist in the editing of English
language documents, including Sport Reports, Human Rights background
reports, and Shadow Reports on international Human Rights conventions;
(iv) Assist the BHR staff in the organization of the Human Rights Law
Summer Camp for selected Law and International Relations university
students from Tajikistan; (v) Teach a daily semiformal one hour
English language conversation and writing class to interested office
staff and law students; (vi) Conduct all other Human Rights-related
tasks as deemed by supervisor.

Qualifications: Highly motivated, responsible individual, preferably
Law student in reputable university; Strong legal research and writing
skills; Demonstrated interest in International Human Rights issues;
Good theoretical skills on international Human Rights Law and
protection mechanisms; Ability to handle several tasks at once while
working independently or as team member; Fluent in English; Working
knowledge of either Tajik (Persian/Dari) or Russian; Interculturally
aware and willing to work and possibly live with local colleagues.

Terms and Conditions: The internship runs for a minimum period of 3
months (approximately June 1-August 31, 2007), is full-time and pays
in local currency a monthly stipend sufficient for room, board and
local transportation. Upon arrival, BHR will assist the Intern in
finding suitable but modest accommodation for the duration of her/his
stay. Interns are responsible to seek from their own institutions the
costs of international travel, visa, and insurance, estimated to cost
a total of $3,500.

Application: Interested applicants must sent: (i) One page (maximum
400 words) essay as to why you are applying for this internship; (ii)
Letter of recommendation from a Law faculty of your university; (iii)
Your CV, not to exceed 2 pages. Applications (indicating "BHR
Internship" as subject of message) should be sent to no later than May
10, 2007 to: Bunafsha_Gulakova@yahoo.com and eCentralAsia@aol.com.

"Preservation of the Traditional Music of the Western Mongolian Zakhchin Tribe"

Otgonbayar Chuluunbaatar, MA

Friday, April 27, 2007, 14:00 - 16:00, Room SE-D

Abstract:
The ethnonym Zakhchin refers to a group of semi-nomadic Oirat Mongols,
who live in the Altai mountain range in the southwestern part of
Mongolia. Thanks to their geographical isolation they were able to
preserve their language, traditions and musical heritage. Despite
assimilation policies, language and ancient songs were preserved even
in the socialist era.

Yet, in the past years the introduction of the capitalistic system led
to significant changes, which caused internal out-migration among the
youths. Furthermore, due to the impact of new media, over the past ten
years the musical preferences of the younger generation shifted
towards Western and Mongolian pop music.

The traditional songs can be divided into different categories
according to their rhythm, tonality, lyrics and usage. Instrumental
accompaniment is rarely used.

The author has been studying traditional Zakhchin songs for several
years now. Her research is based on either the study of secondary
literature and fieldwork among the old singers on the high pastures.
She here presents the development and results of her work. Her goals
are the creation of a private archive of Zakhchin songs in digital and
written form and the production of music CDs.

The lecture is free and open to the public.
The lecture will be held in german language.

nationales.
