The documentary film named "The Kyrgyz People in the 20th Century
(1916-1991)" is a result of the Oral History Project on the Formation
of the Kyrgyz Identity in the 20th Century. It is carried out by the
Maltepe University (Turkey) and Manas University (Kyrgyzstan) with the
sponsorship of Turkish International Cooperation and Development
Agency. The Kyrgyz National University and the State National
Broadcast Company have supported the project.

The aim of the project was to study the developments in the 20th
century of the Kyrgyz history and their impacts on the Kyrgyz national
identity according to the oral sources. Fieldwork of the project
started in March 2007 and continued intensively until July 2007.
During this period, three groups carried out interviews in every
region of Kyrgyzstan. Elder people who are around or above 70 years
old and who were with different professions were chosen for
interviews. Interviews mainly focused on the memories of the everyday
life. Interview questions have covered not only first-hand sources,
but also recorded second-hand sources, by giving importance to the
stories, told them by their parents or grandparents. By this way, the
project team aimed to realize how the political process affected
ordinary people and what memories are still alive. During the
fieldwork process, interview teams have made interviews with 77 people.

The documentary focuses on the main points of the 20th-century history
such as the 1916 uprising, collectivization, the Basmachi movements,
the Stalinist repression, the Second World War, glasnost, perestroika,
and the independence.

The presentation will be held under the patronage of the Ministry of
Culture and Information of the Kyrgyz Republic.
