PUBL.- Erdogan Altinkaynak on Crimean Karaims (Karaylar)
Posted by: Mehmet Tutuncu <m.tutuncu@quicknet.nl>
I am very happy to announce a new Publication on Crimean Karaims (Karaylar)
Crimean Karaims are people of Turk(ic) descent who have adopted
Karaism. This movement could be described as a return to the roots or
sola scriptura. Although the Karaite reformation never became a mass
movement, an ethnic mixture of Alans, Cumans and a number of Turkic
Kipchak tribes in Crimea and northern steppes of Black Sea, as well as
the ruling elites of Khazaria (not all the Khazars) converted to
Karaism. These people became known as Karaims, thus combining the
religious denomination with ethnonym. This book gives a description of
Today Crimean Karaims Culture, religion, folklore, architecture,
famous persons. It contains also samples of Karay (folk) literature.
It is written in Turkish.

Hi,
I'd like readers to know that many of the aforementioned claims are highly controversial and contested at best:
1. There's no definitive proof as of yet that Crimean Karaims are people of Turk(ic) descent who have adopted Karaism. Many hold the opposite view based on historical documents and deductions made from them that most of them or virtually all of their ancestors were ethnic Qaraite Jews who migrated there from other locations in the Byzantine Empire from 1016 to 1200 in addition to 250 families from the Qaraite Jewish community in Jerusalem that were transferred there by the Genoise in the wake of the 1099 Crusader conquest.
2. Please know that Qaraite Judaism already existed under various labels way before it came to be known as "Qaraism". There have always been Jews who rejected additions to the Jewish Bible. They didn't become extinct with the Temple's destruction in 70 AD just because no historical records survived mentioning them from that year till the mid 8th century.
In fact, at least one source refers to the existence of Qaraite Jews in Persia already in the 4th century AD.
3. It is very doubtful whether any Khazars converted to Qaraite Judaism. All the credible evidence I've encountered points to the conclusion that the ruling elites of Khazaria converted to Rabbinical Judaism.
