Europe.

Grants will be offered for the following five programs:

Title VIII National Research Competition:

The National Research Competition (NRC) provides funding for research on
the countries of the former Soviet Union or Central/Eastern Europe and
supports both collaborative and individual research projects. Research
contracts support collaborative projects involving multiple post-doctoral
scholars, or individuals with comparable research skills who do not hold
PhDs, with a maximum award of $70,000. Research grants support projects
conducted by individual U.S.-based scholars or researchers, with a maximum
award of $40,000. The primary scholar on an individual or collaborative
project must be a US citizen or green card holder, and hold a PhD.
Applications are due February 13, 2009.

Title VIII Ed A. Hewett Policy Fellowship:

The Ed A. Hewett Policy Fellowship supports research on the countries of
the former Soviet Union or Central/Eastern Europe conducted by an
individual scholar or researcher under the auspices of a U.S. government
agency, embassy, or field office of a U.S. nongovernmental organization in
these regions. The maximum award is $50,000. Applicants must be U.S.-based
scholars or researchers holding a Ph.D. in any discipline of the
humanities and social sciences, with a concentration on and considerable
background in some aspect of the history, culture, politics, and economics
of the countries of the former Soviet Union or Central/Eastern Europe.
Individuals with comparable research experience who do not hold a Ph.D.
will also be considered. Applications are due March 13, 2009.

Title VIII Short-Term Travel Grants for Research in Central Asia, the
Caucasus, and the Balkans:

The Short-Term Travel Grant program for research on Central Asia, the
Caucasus, and the Balkans provides a maximum award of $3,000 for research
on the countries of Central Asia, the Caucasus, and the Balkans. To
qualify, applicants must be U.S.-based scholars or researchers holding a
Ph.D., or individuals with comparable research experience in any
discipline of the humanities and social sciences or other professional
terminal graduate degree. This competition is held twice annually, with
applications due December 15, 2008 and April 15, 2009. Funds are generally
available to the winners as early as two months after the competition
deadline.

While a wide range of topics receive support each year, all Title
VIII-funded research must contribute to a body of knowledge enabling the
U.S. to better understand the region and to formulate effective policies.
Applicants to NCEEER programs must thus demonstrate, directly or
indirectly, how their research impacts upon current policy debates and
research on such issues. In addition, applicants must be U.S. citizens or
permanent residents.

James R. Millar Graduate Student Prize:

The James R. Millar Graduate Student Prize provides up to $500
annually for the winning graduate student research paper in the
humanities and social sciences regarding current or former communist
regimes. Winners will receive support from the editorial staff of
Problems of Post Communism to prepare the paper for publication.
Applicants must be MA or PhD students at the time of submission.
Applications are due February 13, 2009.

National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Collaborative Research Fellowship:

NEH grants provide up to $40,000 for four to nine months of research
in Eastern Europe and Eurasia for U.S. post-doctoral scholars.
Research topics are not restricted to regional or area studies, but
must involve at least one collaborator from the region and research in
the region itself. Applicants must propose to conduct at least four
months of full-time research, of which two months must be spent
overseas. Scholars who are able to begin their projects between May
2009 and May 2010 are welcome to apply to the 2009 competition.
Funding is available through American Councils and NCEEER from the
National Endowment for the Humanities.
Applications are due February 15, 2009.
